Lately I've been very interested in theoretical underpinnings and
performance value, so have been re-reading a lot of stuff about it. I
think that there are different strokes for different folks, so Nelms
and Burger aren't necessarily for everyone. You may enjoy a review of
the book though and may find some inspiration in it.

Re: BLACKJACK
Well, it is a long story... but basically, my team was assigned chapter
seven of Experimental and Quasi-experimental Designs for Research. We
knew the guys in charge of producing the video companions to the first
chapters and they were dull, boring types. So, we figured that by
chapter seven everyone needed a lift.
Our topic was one of the quasi-experimental designs, one in which you
perform a series of tests and observations over time. So... we got a
couple and had them explain the whole thing while lying nude on the
floor. You can guess what the "experiments" were, and, in between,
they showed and discussed the statistical formulas - writing the
formulas on various parts of each other's anatomies.
It was brilliant, inspired, creative! And it made it three rungs of
the ladder before it was shredded and we were sent back to the salt
mines.

Just get all the magi at DMS to sit at the same Blackjack tables.
EVERYONE crimp the 10 value cards. Doesn't take long to cycle through
even 6 decks. All but the dealer will know his hole card. If not
dealing from a shoe would even know if next card to be dealt is 10
spot. Even if they change decks no prob as cards get cycled through so
fast. Players would even leave the game and it would be set up for the
next set of players.......
Won't log on again until I see you. See ya there.

Re: TODD ROBBINS
Sorry Kevin, the bent coin trick is not new. I used to do it all the
time. I have not done it for several years as a bent coin can really
wear a hole in your pocket. Here is the real work on it. Use a half
dollar it is easier to see. Do the flexing illusion by holding the coin
in front of you grasping an edge with each hand. Coin should be
perpendicular to the floor facing audience. Move your hands back and
forth as though flexing the coin. It will really appear to bend. This
is an old gag like the rubberized pencil. Have another half dollar
really bent at about a 45 degree angle. This should be finger palmed
as you do the flex illusion. A lot of people know the flexing illusion
and are not impressed (at this point) Now comes the hard part. As you
stop the flex movement, in one motion, take the coin away with the
right hand, lower it to the table, backpalm it and toss out the bent
fingerpalmed coin. They will be amazed and focused on the bent coin.
Withdraw your hand naturally and recover the backpalmed coin to classic
palm. After they have examined the bent coin, pick it up or take it
from them. Shuttle pass to the other hand. This switches the coins.
Keep the receiving hand closed and obviously squeeze hard on it saying
you need to return it to its original shape AS IT IS TOMMORROW'S LUNCH
MONEY. Show the flattened coin and pocket it.

It is an insult because it is not a request they would make of other
professionals; they wouldn't ask an auditor to check their bankbook, an
architect to appraise their house. Implicit in the request is the
assumption that what you do is not a real -- or valuable -- profession.

Re: TODD ROBBINS
Oh, I think you'd be surprised! Maybe they wouldn't drag an auditor
into their study to check their bankbook, but anyone who's skill is
"portable" and of whom the requestor can make a request without having
to produce anything (i.e. their bankbook) does, sooner or later,
generally get asked. Doctors, psychologists, lawyers, hairdressers,
telephone sanitizers, entertainers, and, for all I know, Indian Chiefs.
I simply have difficulty with the notion that "implicit in the request
is the assumption that what you do is not a real -- or valuable --
profession." I think it is very real to them and that they are aware
that you posess a unique and valuable talent - one which they are
intrigued by.

Re: TODD ROBBINS
I've been ruminating on this for the remainder of the evening. And I
have a suggestion for you - next time tell them you are a computer
programmer. You will find that there is an even lower Hell than being
asked to perform - it is the one in which they immediately begin to
tell you all about their computer. Not bringing a problem, merely
informing you.
The problem comes from the de rigour question, "What do you do?"
Personally, I wish people wouldn't ask!
But, the direction I was attempting to steer the conversation in
originally was about finding a polite way to turn down a request; one
which preserves one's magical mystique (I didn't like "I only know how
to do stage magic").
So - here is my current favorite (untested):
Host: "David, would you perform some magic for us?"
Me : "Why certainly! I'd be delighted! Let's summon Azuzel."
(Producing large marker pen out of pocket and gesturing toward
center of floor)
"I'll begin to draw a Pentagram here on the floor and you see
if you can find five large black candles."

Re: NEW BOOK
Just finished reading Calvin Trillin's new book "AMERICAN
STORIES" and in it is a chapter devoted to Penn & Teller. This
book is comprised of a series of articles that Trillin wrote for
the New Yorker under the American Journal title. Trillin delves
into the past of both Penn Jillette and Teller as well as how
they came up with their performing style, interesting background
reading for anyone who likes P&T.
.
Besides the P&T piece there are quite a few others that are
enjoyable, including one about Joe Bob Briggs, the guy who is
famous for his reviews of drive-in movies (bad "B" flicks).
Trillin in my eyes has always been a consumate reporter and
humorist and this book doesn't let one down. It's published by
Tickner and Fields and runs about $20.00

Talk is cheap. I've found that ALL professions are questoned
about their expertise. This is a form of politeness to ask
someone about their field. Where the talk goes too far into
detailed advice, the professional usually asks the questioner to
call him at his office and the questions can be followed.
.
Thus someone will probably ask yo about the latest Copperfield
show or what you think of some performer. If they ask to see some
magic, the equivalent would be to mention some performance they
might attend.

says. _Veda_ means wisdom.

including one next to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. Other
possible sites are in Japan and the Netherlands. The 14,000-acre

Re: DMS #1
OK, I know its been a day and a half and there has been no DMS
report yet. It is no excuse, but I got in at 3:30 a.m. and
didn't want to wake Anita and Nathan with fooling with the modem.
.
Here's the way I saw it, and Pete is looking over my shoulder.
Last night's Arabian Nights party was GREAT! Some really fun
costumes - although in my opinion not one person was
authentically in Arabian attire - there was _not_ _one_ _machine_
_gun_ in the whole place! And not one person tried to hold the
DMS hostage. Food was good - Arabian Egg Rolls, Arabian Swedish
Meatballs and genuine Arabian Pizza. It really was fun!
.
The opening Comedy Challenge Show was not so much fun. Something
just wasn't clicking, and with few exceptions, if there had been
a hook, it would have been freely used. The haunting thought is
that Pete and the committee very carefully selected these
finalists as the best of the contestants - no wonder he griped
about the chore of watching the tapes!
.
There were some VERY creative concepts, but, truthfully, faced
with the huge stage of the Tropicanna's Tiffany theater, and over
900 people in attendance, most of the acts just couldn't project
well enough to score. Almost everyone tried to do things that
were just plain too small and they didn't know how to get
themselves and their stuff across the footlights. Timing was, in
many cases, non-existant. When you play a setting that big, you
have to play bigger - your parlour act won't cut it. Oh, well,
Pete promises us a stronger second half.
.
This morning I only caught a bit of Aldo Colombini's Show and
Lecture. It was good. But then I was at the Rene Levand Show
and Lecture. Rene really truly is incredible! And Joe Stevens
has provided a VERY GOOD setup for close-up lectures, with good
video camera work and huge monitors. Rene Levand clearly does
things with one arm that other magi can't do with three. But,
even working with a translator (Tina Lenert), it is clear that it
is the mind of Rene Levand that even transcends the hand. A
super session!
.
Now it is off to the second Comedy Challenge Show - sure hope
Pete is right! I will try to get back on-line sometime this
evening. This time, I'm on Pete's bill, so I'm not even going to
try to read any messages - just send this one and get off. Sure
hope our mass of reporters here can collect their minds and file
some reports!

Re: CASTLE AWARDS BANQUET
I thought I would fill you in on a little more about the awards banquet
other than the vital statistics of who won what. I had never been to
one before and I heard that it was something fun to do- once. It's a
bit on the pricey side- $95 a person but you get to spend an evening
with many of magics luminaries and getting a taste of the life of the
rich and famous. The event was held at the Regent Beverly Wilshire
Hotel in Beverly Hills. A large splendid hotel where I'm sure you can
expect to pay a couple hundred a night to stay. After having the valet
take your car or in some cases, after the limo driver drops you off out
front, you enter and make your way to the reception area. 99% of the
men are in tuxedos and their wives or dates are also dressed for an
elegant evening. We were met by Bill Larsen the president for life of
the Magic Castle and we were quickly offered our favorite libations by
the numerous waiters hovering about. From 6:30 to 7:30 the large
reception area filled with the great, the not so great and the unknowns
(like me) all hob-nobbing about. Eyes darting about to see who's who,
who's where and what they're wearing. At about 7:30 the doors opened
into the main room where we were to be seated and it was quite a sight.
Opulent to be sure but tastefully so. The huge room had a domed
ceiling with a single chandelier that was maybe 15 feet in diameter.
There were no pillars so everyone had an unobstructed of the entire
room and stage. There were approximately 75 tables each seating 10 to
12 people and most of the tables looked full. It was easy to make
small talk with everyone since we all had magic in common an few of us
had ever experienced an evening in a setting as nice as that. I
noticed lots of finely carved multi-colored marbel for railings,
statues and more chandeliers. I'm sure a lot of rich and famous people
have been here before us. Some of the rich or at least famous people
I saw included Sigfried (sp?) and Roy, Lance Burton, Channing Pollock
(sp again?) Max Maven, Tony Giorgio, Johnny Thompson, Bruce Cervon, Ron
Wilson, Marvyn Roy, John Carney, Martin Nash, and a ton of others too
numerous to list. Neil Patrick Harris (Doogie Howser M.D.) who is also
an amateur magician presented an award as well as Ernest Borgnine and
Zsa Zsa Gabor. (She's still ranting about that Beverly Hills cop she
had a run in with) In between awards they had slow dancing to a 30's
type band. Glenn Miller stuff which was the right speed for the event.
I should probably mention that dinner was filet mignon, with some
obscure veggies and an oddly prepared potatoe of sorts. Quite good
actually. The baked alaska for dessert was my favorite though with a
couple cups of Gevalia coffee. Mmmm!
The Barans performed some magic later in the evening which was in my
opinion just an ok performance. They had quite an audience to try to
impress! What I did like was their version of metamorphosis which is
done in a clear plexiglass type box which is never out of view. I
thought that was a wonderful presentation.
The awards themselves seemed to take awhile to present and the end of
the evening the crowd was visibly tired. It went on until nearly
midnight and being in the middle of the week I'm sure a lot of working
stiffs like me were feeling their enthusiasm wane a bit after 5 hours
or so.
All in all it was an interesting evening. I guess I'm glad I went but
I doubt that I'll go again at those prices. I imagine that the regular
paying folks have to make up for the invited guests who I am guessing
get the evening gratis. If it appeals to you to be among the who's who
in magic and "Put on the Ritz" then by all means try to attend next
year. It will be the 25th anniversary and perhaps it will be even
better than this year.

Re: DMS - REPORT #2
Well, there have been more than a few logistical erorrs on my part
this year. The major one was forgetting to get myself booked into
the Tropicanna. I'm here at the Flamingo Hilton, which is a really
nice place, but it has meant that I am away from access to the
computer unless I come back here. And since I haven't been here a
lot, except for when Anita and Nathan have been asleep,
communications have been a real mess. Also, I brought a small,
inadequate laptop this year, so I can't really read or respond to
messages on-line -- can only report.
.
Here is some big news -- the announcement of the contest winners, if
Pete or someone hasn't beaten me to it already.
.
First Place -- VIC & FABRINI -- From San Paolo, Brazil. A very well
done act, with one playing the part of a mechanical man.
.
Second Place -- SCOTT CERVINE
.
Third Place -- TONY CHAPEK
.
BUT -- here is even BIGGER NEWS -- the Annual MAGIC! Awards! Each
year we honor some of the individuals who have made outstanding
contributions to MAGIC! around the World.
.
This year the MAGIC! Advisory Board recommended two special awards:
.
A "MAGIC!'s Special Thanks" Award to JOE, MARTHA, AND AMY STEVENS
for the special effort they have gone to, and the cordiallity they
have shown, in providing for the Annual MAGIC! Meeting to be a part
of the Desert Magic Seminar.
.
The "MAGIC! Member of Honor" Award to TOMMY WONDER for "His
dedication and his willingness to share, which serve as an
inspiration to us all."
.
Thanks to Mr. Tabby Crabb of Conjurer's Woodworks, each of the above
received a special Conjurer's Woodworks Magic Wand as a part of
their Award.
.
Our highest award, the GOLD DISKETTE, is NOT given on an annual
basis, but only when it is singularly deserved. Last year there
were two GOLD DISKETTE Award winners, PETE BIRO and TABBY CRABB.
I'm please to say that this year there were again TWO GOLD DISKETTE
Award winners! For outstanding contributions to the World of
MAGIC!:
.
JERRY BURTON for the creation of IMP!/RDMAGIC, and,
.
ARNAUD VAN RIETSCHOTEN for the creation of MAGIC-NL in the
Netherlands and for his dedication as Sysop of that System.
.
The Awards for Arnaud Van Rietschoten and Tommy Wonder will be sent
to MAGIC-NL along with a copy of the video of the presentation
ceremony.
.
CONGRATULATIONS to all the Award winners!

Re: DMS - REPORT #2
Well, I made it to Seattle! Argh.. tired. Yo bet. the comedy
Challenge RESULTS were amazing. The Top three... Vic and Fabrini,
Scott Cervine and Tony Chapek were reported. A note: On that show
almost the entire cast had or will soon, be booked at the Crazy
Horse in Paris. Vic and Fabrini are there now, took a few days
off to fly here to compete. Rudy Coby has worked there, and also
a non contestant, Tom Mullica was there for about three years (he
was on the show) and Kevin James is booked to go there for the
summer.
.
An amazing observation. NONE of the Comedy Club types scored at
all with the Magicalumpkin audience. They were too hip for the
magic oriented folks. Only Gazoo Macee came close... and he is a
street performer. His opening was KILLER. The curtain opened and
you didn't see him. THere was a voice, calling for "JOe"... then
saying, "I can't work, Joe, go to to go home... " etec. and finally
he came out of the audience and onto the stage.
.
He was the FIRST worker to link with the audience...
.
Altho Scott Cervine (who was on the first show) placed second... he,
in fact was really the First Show winner!!!
.
rudy Coby's new stuff is KILLER, but many said "it isn't comedy"...
All in all... the event overall was exceptionally good. With
Rene Levand and Lennert Green, AND FINN JON... you didn't need
any more.
.
I'm sorry I had to leave and miss the final day, the party and the
Backstage Tour at the Mirage... but biz is biz...
.
I make more money in ONE DAY shooting these race ads, then I do
all month working my 9-5 editing job!!! So had to fly...
.
I hope others will post messages. Am tired, it is late and we
were working like fools ungil midnight at the Kingdome after flying

Re: WHERE ARE YOU?
Where is everybody? DMS was over yesteday!! ARgh... all alone up here
in Seattle and SEVEN hours before my flight. Maybe can go get on
standby.
.
More on DMS? Well, lets see.... Lectures were as good as you would
want. Finn Jon, Lennert Green, Aldo Columbini and Rene Levand. Wow.
Colombini had a great cup and ball routine. He a sequence where he was
gong to have a ball go thru the table... it wouldn't but zammo... a
CUP went thru... caught me by surprise.
.
Finn Jon's NEW act... lots of good stuff. Basic premise was built
around an effect created by Fred Kaps... which Kaps gave me... and I
decided it s too good to keep for myself so I taught it to Finn. Can't
give it away here, or anywere... but it was a REAL TREAT to see him do
it and get such a great reaction on stage.
.
Mullica's "tight" Crazy Horse act was flawless and hilarious. Bits of
business with the bubble gum... changing to a pink balloon... GREAT.
Tommy tells me his club is SET and will be very near the new MGM Grand
and the Tropicana Corner... he is really excited about it.
.
Great Tomsoni hinted that his show, "Les Sorcery" may be going to
Broadway!!!! And.... John is said to be close to a DEAL with the new
Kirkorian-backed MGM Grand for a major show!!!! Let's hope so...
.
Hey, online, long distance, got to run... adios muchachos y muchachas!

ABSOLUTELY RIGHT on when to perform when asked. Some hosts feel

But when conditions are right, it can be a kick. I've gotten

Cy...
This seems like the same publicity stuff that Henning and the Yogi
(Bear or Bera) released a couple of years ago (see past issues of Stan
Allen's Inside Magic). Seems that this info. appears everyonce in a
while and then we never hear or see anythong about this again. The
first times they were planning to build in Orlando next to DisnyeWorld.
The big hook that time was that a major theme park was going to be
built with a magic bent to it and that it was to be designed by a major
magician, but they wouldn't release the name. For quite a while rumors
abounded about who it would be, Copperfield, Blackstone, S&R and then
it was revealed that it was Henning. I saw a three page story/spread on
Henning's life with the Mahareshi in Life magazine a short time later
(complete with pix) that told about his departure from magic, his
meeting and marrying Debbie and how he moved to India and sold all his
worldly possessions. It even included a picture of a model of the park.
.
Of course you've heard of the new theme park being built in Guianna
(sp?) its called JonesWorld and there is an incredible jungle ride
including a visit to a small airport where there is one of those
shoot-em-up shows and their specialty is chilled grape Kool-Aid and
grape popsicles....I can hardly look forward!

One of the MAJOR points FINN JON makes in his lecture is the ability
to really BE READY and to BE A MAGICIAN at all times. To always be

And he truly has those kinds of things. Almost everything that he
performs with are ordinary objects. Cigars, Tennis Balls, Money,

Re: DMS AND ME
Just got back from DMS and it was absolutely terrific! I don't think
I have ever enjoyed a seminar more than this one! Being a little new
to magic (seven years worth) I wandered around like a wide-eyed child
taking everything in and just LISTENING and WATCHING. I am not sure if
anyone else ever felt this way, but after awhile you see things that
are really nice, but you always look for moments where you go back to
that first incredible feeling you had when you saw your very first
effect. And you hope that someday, something will get you to that
exhilleration again. Well, for me, that happened. It wasn't magic per
se, but I was seated right up against the stage during Sigfried and
Roys backstage tour. I was impressed by the video, but felt a little
sad that it wasn't live and since I didn't know the line up, I wasn't
prepared for what came next. Suddenly I was engulfed in fog and as the
stage darkened, there was a terrifying roar and out came the dragon!
Mind you, I was approximately ten feet away and looking straight up
into this laser-eyed monster! For a moment, I experienced nothing but
sheer terror! Then it dissolved into child-like hysteria and I was
absolutely awe-struck. NOTHING could have matched this in LIFE! I
cannot think of a word that is strong enough to describe the myriad of
emotion I experienced during this wonderful interlude in the seminar.
It was just incredible! Sigfried and Roy have it all, everything, the
whole enchilada. Now I have to go back and see the show. Again, and
again, and again.
Other highs for me was meeting Max Maven, who just blew me away with
his knowledge and intensity. Again, not enough words to describe the
experience. He's awesome!
Karrel Fox and Billy Mc Comb signing my jacket for me. Again, I
couldn't squeak out an intelligent conversation. Just too shy. The
lectures! Aldo Columbini was great. I learned so much from him! Finn
Jon and his bubbles...beautiful...Lance Burton's show was absolutely
stunning! First time I had ever heard him TALK! I had seen him
several times, but never in a speaking situation. And as an alumni of
University of Kentucky, I recognized that soft southern charm. Lance
is just incredible. What a show!
Where I would most like to have been and wasn't: I asked if my jacket
could go backstage and be signed by Lance. It took a few minutes and
Lance's assistant came back and appologized for the delay, but Lance
was just stepping out of the shower when he signed my jacket. Oh, oh,
oh...now THAT was a happy jacket! Plus I got to hold one of Lance's
doves for a minute and as the little creature perched unobtrusively on
my shoulder, I remembered what Roy had said about animals. It was a
special moment.
I cannot wait until NEXT year's DMS. Joe Stevens did a wonderful job
as did everyone connected in any way. You were all fantastic and you
made me one very happy magician!
Love and magic

Lori and I still go most Saturday evenings although we haven't been in
the last month or so until last weekend. It seems that a lot of people
were at DMS so it was not nearly as crowded as usual. We were happily
surprised by the two good acts in the Palace. One of the few that my
wife wanted to see a second time. (Blackmore& Gold and another
performer named Brett ???) Bret's act was heavily influenced by Shimada
and Lance Burton and Blackmore & Gold were very funny Illusionists.
Can you make it to the next Sunday lecture? I believe it will be Aldo
Colombini. I saw Joe Givens lecture today. I really enjoyed it but I
was a little short of cash to buy all of his notes. Good unique stuff
from simple card tricks to more bizzare things such as pushing a Q-tip
in one ear and out the other!

WOW! Stan - I heard the rumor at DMS, but basically as a rumor.
Your's is the "eye witness" confirmation! THE PIG IS DEAD!!! SUPER
NEWS!!! It may have been wisked away, under cover of darkness,
deliberately while the majority of us were at DMS. Two possible
reasons suggest themselves:
1) Milt wanted everyone out of town while he did it, so that there
would be no crowd standing by and cheering, or,
2) SOMEONE ELSE did it! AND _WE_ (those who were at DMS) have the
PERFECT alibi - we were all in Las Vegas with each other, we
were all seen by hundreds of people, there are hotel registers
and other records to show that we were out of town, and there
are probably even videos with our pictures in 'em - far, far
away in Las Vegas when it was removed! Hmmm... come to think
of it, YOU were here, pretty much alone . . . Stan! You

Re: TODD ROBBINS
Well, legally you can't tell anyone that you are a doctor or lawyer, so
you can't "fake" being in those professions when asked. But, like I
think I mentioned to T. A., try telling them you are a computer
programmer and see if the questions stay at a superficial level. Now,
I don't know what happens if you tell 'em you are a mortician.
(By the way, my comment above is not any sort of "gripe" about _any_
questions I have ever been asked, to date, by any MAGIC! members,
either on-line or in person. As Cy's message suggests, if I thought
such questions were abusive of my computer background, I would suggest
the need to move to a paid relationship. The types of computer related
conversations I have had so far with MAGIC! members have been ones that
I have been happy to try to help with).
I like your concept - that being asked about the latest Copperfield
show or what you think of some performer is OK, that being asked to
perform can be met with the suggestion that they attend a performance
of yours, or, (and here I'm adding my own thoughts) with a willingness
to do something if you are so inclined.

Re: SUBMARINE RIDE FROM LV
Ee;
Finally made it back to Anaheim, rained very heavily from Victorville
on in.
.
DMS was vwry good, perhaps the best yet. Finally got to see the
entire gestalt of S & R - awesome. Last year I was much to close
to the stage, couldn't see everything.
.
Lance Burton's show has evolved - when we saw it 7 months ago it was
good, now it's even better.
.
The lectures at DMS were outstanding - four of the best I've seen.
.
I was personally disappointed with the results of the contest. Vic
& Fabrizzi were good, but I don't think a basic mime act with a magic
theme should win a comedy magic contest. Admittedly Fabrizzi does
some incredible moves, but they aren't related to magic or much less
comedy.
.
I could have accepted Cervine first, Chapen second, and Vic & Fabrizz
third. Actually Gazzo was funnier and did more magic than they did.
.
But hey - this is the peoples choice and the people spoke. Probably
the same reason we have lousy politicians.
.
Note to Pete & Bill it would be helpful to have a brief spiel on
what the judging criteria should be. A point system would also help
in determining the winner, e.g. 3 points for a 1st place vote, 2 for
second and one for third. It is extremely difficult to only vote for
one act.

Were you at the Ring 21 Timothy Wenk lecture? His Professor's Nightmare
took me by surprise and was very good. Is there a good routine that
comes with the effect? I think I figured out the moves, but may buy the
commercial version anyway. It would be a killer for people who know the
standard effect. What I like about Wenk's version is that you end up
with three same-sized ropes for examination. His Misled was, of course,
great. I really didn't get much more out of the lecture. He did have
one nice move with a chosen card out of a card spread. Let me know if
there is anything else you might be curious about regarding his stuff.

Re: DMS - REPORT #2
I agree about Gazzo Macee -- he definitely _WAS_ the first performer in
the competition to link up with the audience (he didn't show up until
the start of the second show). For a variety of reasons, my vote
didn't happen to be for him, but my bet was that he would win. I was
totally startled when he didn't even show up in the list of win, place
or show.
BUT -- I DISAGREE with your analysis of what happened. Gazzo hit
because he was funny and BECAUSE HE DID MAGIC. If you look back, the
audience applauded every time anyone on stage did any magic. The pity
was that such rounds of applause were few and far between.
An audience of magicians is biased -- they want to see magic. Call
that odd if you want, call it a limited viewpoint, call it eccentric,
but it is what they want. And, frankly, for the most part, the magic,
in any shape or form - classical or avante-garde - simply wasn't there.
And when it was there, it was almost always second string to the
comedy, sometimes it was almost non-existant. I'll bet that many
members of the audience know where their local comedy club is - I'll bet
some of 'em even go there -- when they want to see comedy. But when
they go to a magic convention or to the Magic Castle, what they want to
see is MAGIC. Most of the contestants seemed to overlook that
particular method of winning the audience's hearts.
As to the stuff being too hip for them, I can't see it that way.
Placing a condom over an obvious inflation device and blowing it up
is neither magic nor is it comedy (one act actually did this). The
people who find such things funny aren't "hip," they are sexually
repressed. Giggling over flatulence (farting) is funny when you are
seven years old - if it is funny when you are 18 or older, it is
pathetic. Same with blowing up condoms on stage - I'd expect a laugh
from a pre-teen. Finding it funny as an adult doesn't mean you are
"hip," it means that you have never evolved into an adult who accepts,
understands, and enjoys sex as a normal part of life.

Re: HENNING NELMS
MAGIC!-NL Fri 20 Mar 92 13:50
Tommy Wonder posted the following msg:
I am a great fan of Nelm's book. Personally I do not feel that he
described a certain style of magic. In his book is a discussion of
the technique on how to build up and construct your work. The
things he points out can be used irregardless of your performing
style, it has nothing to do with a certain performing style, only
with correctness.
Correct construction is necessary for all of us. So often even
blatant mistakes are labeled "Oh well, but that's my performing
style!".
In the Nelms book, of course you get a sense of what style of
performing Nelms liked, but that does not mean that his style is
the thing he wants you to do, or that his style is the only
correct way. But all in all I feel that Nelms was very succesfull
in describing the things one has to think about when constructing
the work.
If Nelms style is not your style, that's fine, but that does not
mean you can slide the book aside, as if the contents would not
be applicable to your style, simply because it is different. Some
of the concepts described can improve anybody's work dramatically.
They are universally valid.
Whenever I read Nelms, I have great trouble to catch sleep later
on. I hope you give it another try.

Re: WASHINGTON DC AREA
Arnaud -
Regarding the Washington "magic scene" - There are three magic shops
in the area. The two downtown shops are Magic Masters which is in
the shopping area located under the Press Building at Penns. Avenue
and 14th Street and Al's Magic Shop on Vermont Ave near the
MacPhearson Square stop on the Metro. Magic Masters is the standard
format for this magic chain with a beautiful display of a selected
number of items. Al's is a fully stocked magic store. I recommend
a visit to both. Magic Masters to see one attempt to market magic
to the public and Al's to meet and see Al Cohen, one of the truly
nice people in magic and possibly the finest magic demonstrator alive
today. The third shop is Barry's Magic Shop located in Wheaton,
Maryland, some 10 or so miles from downtown. I.B.M. Ring 50 meets
downtown at the Channel Inn on Maine Avenue the first Wednesday of
each month and the S.A.M. Assembly 23 meets the third Wednesday at
the National Press Club on 14th and Penns. Ave. Copperfield is
appearing in Northern Virginia on March 28 and 29. Scotty York
works the bar at Casey's in Georgetown once a month (I think it is
the first Saturday). Al Cohen would be able to tell you about what
is going on.

Re: FLAKES
Sorry to hear that you were conned about a non-existant party.
Actually, a similar thing happened to me once. I was a midnight-to-six
DJ for a rock station (there were two of us and we did a team bit).
One night we got a call from some young ladies who expressed an intense
desire to come visit us, only they said they didn't have a car. They
gave us an address, so I went off to find them.
When I got to area I discovered that there was no "734 Maple Street."
So I called back to my associate (from a pay phone, we didn't have car
phones at the time) that there was no such number on Maple Street. He
said, "Well, stuff like that happens -- come on back." So I started
back. Meanwhile, he looked down at his notepad and realized that what
he'd said was "734" but what he'd written down was "374." So he opened
the mike and said, "The magic number this hour is 374 . . . That's 374!
Most of you out there don't know what I'm talking about, but the magic
number this hour is 374!" Well, 374 turned out to be a vacant lot
anyway! So I stopped off, bought us a couple of Royal Castle burgers,
and went back to the studio.

Re: SELLING YOURSELF
While I certainly agree that fumbling through one's pockets is a bad
sign, the idea that a performance can only be deemed a good act if it
has a central theme or continuity is far too limited.
Any good act will, in a sense, have a de facto theme -- the performer's
world-view. But it is by no means necessary for there to be an explicit
theme involved.
As for continuity, there seems to be a belief among magicians that
every effect should blend into the next, which would be the equivalent
of a music concert in which every piece made a straight segue. It is
clear that such an approach is by no means necessary.

told me it was the LINKS that you used between tricks that were
often the most important element... to make it an ACT.

I think his magic content (being a non new item) might have hurt
his with the voters, but he (no one actually) didn't have near
enough votes to topple Vic and Fabrini.

I just hope all that did well, realized it, and those that bombed

Re: DMS - REPORT #2
Glad you asked about Connie Boyd and her show at the Trop. A funny
thing happened on Friday night - Anita & I were rushing to get to the
All-Star Close-Up Show and, without looking at the program, headed for
the Tiffany Theater. We were kinda late and could see that the show
was about to begin, so WE BREEZED RIGHT BY THE MATRE 'D!!! He said,
"You know where your seats are?" and we said, "Yes, thank you." Only
when we got in, there were no little numbers left on the table and the
curtain was going up - so, still thinking we were at the All-Star show,
we grabbed a couple of empty seats, figuring we would move over once
our eyes adjusted. Uh, the DMS show was in a different room and WE
were at the FOLIES show!
Connie Boyd did a nice act! Lots of very classical stage illusions,
done with her in formal evening dress - no tights and leotards - with
three "Chippendale's" type male assistants. Competently done.

The Hilton bounce back package is a HILTON promotion. Therefore, it is
not tied to an airline at all. They don't care if you come across the
desert on a camel (parking might be a problem, though) as long as you
state that you want the bounce back package. Sunday through Thursday
are the days, $24.95 the rate, and food comes with it. Speaking of
food, I need a good recipe for chicken soup. Some toad gave me a nasty
cold at DMS. The rain didn't help. Wet magicians are miserable
magicians. Especially cold and wet magicians. Aaaaaahchooooo!

Since you are telling Jerry about it, the "Hilton Bounce Back" that you
arranged was GREAT! As you know, because of some technical reason, we
had to pay more than the $24.95, but still was a good deal and the
staff at the Flamingo is VERY nice and helpful. The food package -
breakfast and dinner - was in either their buffet or something called
"Food Fantasy," which just sounded too weird to try (I have fantasies,
but they aren't usually about food). But the buffet - while it was no
Golden Nugget or Caesar's Palace - was GOOD. They had two of my
favorites every morning - corned beef hash and SOS (chipped beef) - and
both were exceptionally well done; so much so that we voluntarily
returned each morning, even after using up the freebie. So, THANKS!

Boil a 6 lb. chicken with Leeks, Onions, Celery and Carrots. For
about 2-3 hours. Take out chicken and tear into little pieces. Set
aside. Strain the stuff out and put the broth in fridge over night.
Scrape off the fat and toss out.
.
Cook new carrots and celery in broth, then add the pieces of
Chicken... and in separate saucepan cook some "al dente" noodles.
Couple of handfulls... When soup about ready toss in the noodles
and add spices you like. A bay leaf is good to put in when cooking
the veggies. I am not a heavy spicer so use little or none, and
almost NEVER use onions. Cut up leeks add a lot of flavor. Cut 'em
with scissors to about 3-in. lengths (greens).

Seems impossible that one state could sue another over the content of

What I heard on the news today is that the Supreme Court has agreed to
review a case in Florida concerning the right of a Church to perform
ritual animal sacrifice. It is contrary to state law concerning the
butchering of animals. The Appeals Courts have, so far, found in favor
of the State, but according to the report, the Church's position has
the backing of several major denominations including the Presbeterians

RE: "Where do these people come from?"
No telling, Rick. OK, I _know_ where they come from - after all, I
have a kid - but I ain't telling!
A while back I raised the premise that magic isn't all that safe in our
society. It is only _at_ _the_ _moment_ that we have stopped burning
magi (or suspected magi) at the stake -- but the whole notion that we
are now OK and acceptable is, in my opinion, a _LOT_ more fragile than
many think. We like to think that society is "enlightened," but the
reality is that we aren't really very far away from fear of the
unknown. Remember the Twilight Zone series and "The Monsters Are Due
On Maple Street"?

I agree an overall theme for a close-up act is not mandatory, however
it does allow for continuity and an overall cohesiveness.
.
I was merely commenting on the fact that many close-up performers
do not have a sequence (theme or not) that has been thought through
to give the act an overall structure. When I see someone checking to
see what to do next I think it shows a lack of preparation.
.
Johnnie Ace's act has no central theme, but every move and sequence
is throughly routined, not a single fumble or missed beat. It has an
opening, middle, and end.

which one of several with photos of magicians on the covers. It was
very thick (particularly so in those days) and had EVERYTHING one
could possibly dream for within it's pages. First time I ever saw a
magic shop was Harry Baker's shop in Washington, DC during my high
school senior class trip. I only had a few minutes and I remember
that Harry (or somebody) did the color changing knives.

Re: SLEEP
I share your opinion of the Henning Nelms book. However, since I
have seldom encountered anyone who felt the same, I always assumed
my feelings about the book were tainted by my feelings for Nelms the
person. I assume that you knew Henning as I did. He was a member
of SAM Assembly 23 here in Washington and fought against anyone who
wasn't a white Christian being a member. He was one of the reasons
that Al Cohen never jointed that Assembly until the 1970s when I and
some others forced them to abandon the black ball method of approving
membership. They actually had a bag containing white cubes and black
marbles. There was also a small box with a hole in it. One black
ball from a unknown was sufficient to prevent membership in the
Assembly. Open voting on membership allowed Al to become a member.
Shortly after (I am talking 1970's), we voted in the first black
member. Henning never attended any meetings after that. I find it
difficult to respect his opinions knowing the kind of person he was.
I also remember how he performed magic and found little there to
foster respect for his opinions on how magic should be performed.
However, like you, I plan to drag the book back out and look it over
once again. The years may have mellowed my prejudices, but I still
suspect the book enjoys its standing because of the lack of
competition rather than excellence of content.

Re: SUBMARINE RIDE FROM LV
With regard to your request for Pete and me to provide "a brief spiel
on what the judging criteria (for the DMS comedy challenge) should
be." The BOD discussed this at some considerable length over the
last year. What I regarded as an excellent suggestion from Steve
Bryant regarding last year's contest was also discussed (the multiple
vote concept versus the single vote). The final decision of the BOD
was to provide NO criteria for judging and only a single vote. It
was felt that the voter should simply vote for whomever they felt
was the best act using their own set of criteria. The question of
having only a single vote was a more difficult decision for the BOD.
Frankly, I think the concern over the mechanics of counting multiple
votes (voting for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place instead of a single vote)
was the primary factor that resulted in continuation of the single
vote method. I predict a change in the future.

Re: DMS - REPORT #2
The improvisation (not impromptu - read intro to Weber's "Lifesavers"
for one discussion of the difference) phase of the close up contest
will be used to determine the finish of the finalists. The first
phase of the competition will be a freestyle close up performance
as was done in the earlier DMS close up competitions. The performers
will know some of the items which will be on the table (basically, it
will be a standard restaurant table setting for two people). However
, this does not preclude the introduction of surprise items. There
will also be two "diners" seated at the table when the contestant
enters. The contestants will be isolated from viewing the other
contestants performances prior to their own performance. No magic
props may be used or introduced by the performer. However, aids such
as pulls, holdouts, and other invisible "tools" are permitted. A
set of more detailed instructions will be provided entrants. The
Seminar Sentinel back page ad has a bare bones outline. Since the
introduction of the idea a couple of years ago, it has been debated
at length by the BOD with considerable input from others including
some who are members of MAGIC! The resulting contest will be a
distillation of those discussions and inputs.

I also like Sylvester's effects with the steam and sparks from his

his presentation fails to convey this appeal to the audience. I
felt he would either hit or miss in Vegas. He missed.

I guess we didn't get to spend a lot of time together at DMS - I would

And I enjoy listening to those programs - I have a reasonable sized
collection of old radio programs on tape.
Of course, I remember Merita Bread (although not as a sponsor),
Grapette, Nehi, and Yoo Hoo (didn't drink much of the last one, I once
found a worm in a bottle of it); also Moon Pies and RC.
Oh, yeah, and from radio I remember the Don McNeil Breakfast Club
("Good Morning, Breakfast Clubbers . . .") and a kid's show with a
character named Sparky. Also remember Buster Brown shoes as a sponsor.
Now I'm trying to remember what stuff I bought at the magic shop. I
know I had an Atomic Lightbulb and a DeLand's Automatic Deck.

Re: DMS - REPORT #2
I think this Improvisational contest is going to be fantastic! I'm
really looking forward to it.
As to checking out Weber - you might want to have him write up the
application form, automatically including permission to use anything in
Lifesavers. Otherwise, it is going to get complex -- the notice in the
book says that "theater performance rights" are reserved, but it also
says "You are hereby granted full permission to perform any and all of
these routines with or without the accompanying patter and or
presentation anywhere on the planet and in the universe, twenty-four
hours a day, for whomever you please in any improvisational setting."
In the candy store yesterday I came across something I hadn't seen
before - "Gummy Lifesavers." (Yeah, I've seen 'em sticky before, when
it is humid, but these are actually made this way in an attempt, I
guess, to gain a share of the gummy bear, gummy shark, etc. market.
Interesting how they have expanded the line - LifeSavers, LifeSaver
Holes, and now Gummy LifeSavers. I wonder if you can use 'em in an
improvisational setting?

Re: TODD ROBBINS
If you can back palm coins the thing I described is not all that hard.
Just back palm the good coin straight out in front of you and let the
finger palmed bent one fall out of your hand as you lower it over the
table. The backpalming motion makes it appear as though you are just
tossing the coin onto the table.
I never have gotten the hang of the Goshman or Tenkai. I prefer to go
into a back finger clip between 1st and 2nd fingers. This is a stronger
grip in my opinion, and I am able to hold my hand out almost perfectly
flat. I keep the coin back far enough in the finger clip so that the
edge does not show from the front. In squeezing the fingers together
the flesh totally covers the edge of the coin.

Re: DICE CUP
Last time I checked there were NO GOOD dice cups for stacing. I
have some thoughts... try a major game supply like Brooks Bros.,
or Sharper Image. Of coure you can do the way Crandall used to and
have the cup made by a leather worker. I have a cup Crandall made
and inscribed FRED KAPS on... which I was willed.
.
You only need to determine the size you want. You might pracatice
with an empty food tin can. The books (if you have them) will tell
you the size. Just a second and I will measure a couple of mine.
.
Inside diameter on the Crandall cup is 2 1/8 x 3-inches deep. You
want good SQUARE EDGED dice for stacking and the stack of four must
be just about 1/8 to 1/4 inch lower than the inside depth of the
cup when they are stacked.
.
I have a couple of European cups that are slightly conical shaped,
and gaffed ala chop cup as well. They are JUST AS GOOD.
.
I have a "Whip Cup" that will rolls all Aces when you want that
also works for stacking. It is 2 3/8 I.D. and 3 5/8 deep (for
slightly larger dice than the other cup).
.
I also have one that looks just like the casino cups with the
mushroom shaped pad on top whenon table mouth down. It is smooth
inside with no lip. It is 2 3/4 dia, 3 1/2 deep.
.
Hope that helps. The Audley Walsh and Crandall books are the best.
There are a couple of others, one I think by Marlo.
.
To learn it is best to kneel on the floor and work on the linoleum.
A table with formica is good. But on the floor saves you bending
over to keep picking them up.
.
I have suggested to some to make a clear plastic cup so you can
see the action inside as you work. No better way to learn.
.
Do not use a glass. Glass can break and cut your mitt!
.
Good luck.

Re: DMS AND ME
Thanks, Bill, how kind of you! I was thrilled with the seminar! In
fact, today I had a group of tourists come into the agency from Japan.
They wanted to go to Las Vegas and asked me what there was that would
be interesting to see. I told them they could NOT go home without
seeing Sigfried and Roy. They just HAD to. It was beyond spectacular.
Then I said to move quickly and stop by and see Lance as it was sheer
beauty. Not to forget Melinda, Geno Munari, Gary Darwin, Kirby Van
Birch - well, you get the idea. The asked what the BEST in
entertainment was and I gave them the best! Better than best! And I
am happy that I can send people up there and know they will NEVER come
back and say "Hey, that show you recommended wasn't very good." In 7
years of travel I have NEVER heard ANYONE say they ddin't like Sigfried
and Roy. Well, one guy did, actually. But we dragged him out back and
shot him, so he won't bother anybody anymore.
I wish you could have heard my phone call home right after the
backstage tour. I played the part of the kid, my daughter, the
exasperated adult. I was yelling "Holly, Sigfried and Roy have a
DRAGON! It's AWESOME!" and SHE says "Well, of COURSE they do, Mom,
Sigfried and Roy have EVERYTHING!" like a large, terrifying,
laser-eyed dragon is just commonplace news when you're talking about
her heroes. I mean, would they have anything LESS? Of course Holly
believes the dragon is REAL. Don't try and tell her it's not. Don't
take her up and show her and pound on it and say "See? Metal!" She'll
come right back and tell you that it might LOOK like metal, but that is
to fool people who don't believe in dragons. Sigfried and Roy have a
REAL dragon. Just ask Holly. She'll tell you.
Magically,
Stace

Re: HOME SWEET HOME
Couldn't help thinking (again) what Roy had said about the kind
treatment of animals. And one comment I forgot to add about DMS that
impressed me was that every animal I saw was being thoughtfully taken
care of very well. The tigers looked exceedingly happy and so nice and
clean! And the beautiful dove I got to hold was so gentle I knew right
away it was well cared for. That made me so happy to see that.
Animals give so much and ask so little in return. My own meower was
waiting for me as I turned the corner into the driveway. She was
perched on the porch just meowing herself to death with happiness. Her
human was HOME! She resumed her place on the bed last night and we
went through our usual petting session before dozing off. I was told
she sat on the window sill for almost the entire length of DMS waiting
for the sound of the car that would bring me home. As Roy said, "Love
animals and be kind to them." Thanks Roy, for practicing what you
preach.
Love and magic

You might not know it, but the guy behind the counter at Joe's

I sure wish he would drop the 'wild nose-hair' and ear wax bits, they

Doing something totally different or avant-garde is commendable, but
the fact that the audience doesn't react to it the way they think
they should makes it difficult at best. Tony Blake has a similiar
problem with his geek-man act. I think they are two of the most
unique acts around, but they don't get the reactions they expect.
I think Max hit upon it when he mentioned the fact that the
personna they present are not 'likable'.

Re: DMS - REPORT #2
I would agree with you regarding the "Back Stage Tour" event. When
I originally suggested the concept to Joe, I wanted the role of the
stage in the actual production to be conveyed to the magician
audience. I do not feel that my original concept was realized
although the product that ended up being delivered was overall a
success with the audience. The tape was of VERY mixed quality with
some extremely poor camera work and editing. It tended to list the
statistics rather than the whys. For me, the greater items of
interest would have been which came first the stage or the show.
Why the massive lift? Why the ring? Why the lights? Of course,
there was a potential danger here that I realized from the start.
Who or what is really the star of the show? The stage or S&R? I
feared this might preclude the backstage tour concept from ever being
accepted. Fortunately, S&R did either not think of this or feel
their egos were threatened and they accepted the concept and took
full charge of its production. The BOD was a bit concerned about
the logistics of moving 800-900 people throught the backstage in the
available timeframe. The S&R staff resolved the problem by not
having a back stage tour as such but allowing the audience to come
close the the most obvious elements of the show - namely the dragon,
the costumes, and S&R as personified by their apartment. The only
bottleneck being the line to the apartment which was accepted by
those waiting since they could look about the stage while waiting or
examine the photos on the wall, etc. So, while it wasn't what I had
in mind originally, and I agree it was a mixed bag, it worked much
better than I ever thought it would. I still feel there it room for
a future effort that includes a presentation on the actual creation
and development phases.

One should also bear in mind that success is like the proverbial
rose in that whomever is talking about it is using their terms to
measure it. Does Joe measure a given DMS successfullness in terms
of financial success, artistic achievement, customer happiness, or
personal satisfaction? I suspect he includes elements of all of the
above but most likely weights them differently than you or me. I
feel that Max's accessment of the backstage tour could be applied to
the entire DMS...mixed, but with high points.

Didn't know you were a Wildcat. I happen to be a Hilltopper.
Graduated from Western many years ago. I was one of the Western
Kentucky magicains along with David Hoy, Bill Boley, Jim Wilkins and
others. Used to do magic at Kaintuck Territory and Beach Bend Park as
well as every college in the state. I did at least ten shows on the UK
campus while there. Nice to here someone else out there from God's
country. MIKE.

Re: DMS - REPORT #2
Before I logged on this AM, I thought about this subject and all of
a sudden recalled the REASON we decided to put in the wording that
"invisible devices" allowed.
.
We figured that they would use them anyway and the feeling of the
board, Jay, Obie, Wells, Joe and I -- and we had input from half-a
-dozen respected performers who had heard of the possibility of
the Improv -- was that we wanted to spell out as much as possible
up front. By laying the ground rules out NOW... fully a year in
advance, it would encourage creativity.
.
I can, however, see your point. But, lets think of this. What if
we didn't say anything about that? Don't you think those that
know how to use such devices would use them anyway?
.
Remember there will be 12 acts doing their CHOICE of material and
the audience will pick the 6 finalists who then go for the
improv set.
.
At least it hasn't been done before, and innovation is one thing
we always strive for.
.
My biggest concern this last time was how UNFUNNY so many acts
were. And how poor the entries were from 13 to about 50th...

Now you got to see James Lewis do his handling of the Bill Switch.
Should be easy as he is local to you and will be at IBM, SLC.

Canadian guy Zaharak with mixed bag of stuff (Big Balloon on head)
didn't have AN ACT... just disjoiinted bits.
Magic Plumbers... how can you forget? They all wore thumb tips
during entire act.

Your observations/opinions are goooooood.

I have preached "LIKABLE" IN PERFORMING for 40 years. I asked
Dan (Sylvester) if he was still doing the nose hair stuff...(in
a way to suggest it was not good) and he just said, "Yes, I have
a new handling on it."

Certain age people think all younger folks are on drugs if they
are not short haired, conservatively dressed. ARgh...

My brain has faded (two jobs sucks) (got a third lined up doing a
monthly column for a Japanese Magazine... working to even up the
trade imbalance) but I forget who the Last Year MIME was? Who?
.
Before you reply. It makes me think that maybe it is because it
takes a lot of study, practice and skill to MIME... and the main
thing most Mimes do work on is there PERSONNA... attitude, acting,
wich most magicians DON'T think about at all. hmmmmmmmmmmm

Re: CHOP CUP
There is no difinitive work. The Ken Brooke routine, the Don Alan
routine, The Larry Jennings/Ron Wilson/Bob Stensel is (IMHO) the
best and the one I use.
.
Paul Daniels does it on stage BIG SHOWS, 3,000 plus... it is all
his personality and asking the questions "where is it" etc... of
a person in the audience... no need to bring them up, just the
lines back and forth make Daniels' the best (I believe it is
based on the Ken Brooke Manuscript -- except the talk).
.
I have a couple of wild loads... one that would fit you. Get a
drumhead tube type load container to fit snugly into the cup.
Fill with rice or similar substance (small crystals... diamonds?)
OK, over the mouth place flash paper. Do you know wht this is?
Is a small load cell filled with something with paper cover to
keep from falling out... Mouth (paper covered) side DOWN.
.
Do ususal ball stuff and load in (secretly) the Jennings routine
cover with the silk and little glass IS THE BEST... (I believe
this was REALLY invented by Bob Stensel (around Detroit area, whre
Jennings came from)... load in the gaff....
.
By coincidence there happens to be a candle burning nearby (or you
can just light a match, lighter or anything...)
.
Now unde some pretext you say you need to fill the interior of
the cup with warm air (?) or whatever...
.
Hold cup over flame flash paper goes off and the rice, diamonds
or what.... fall to the table... use a cloth on table to pick up
cleanly....
.
Other load is a lump that fills cup with hole in it to hold stack
of coins or dice. When you lift the hlder sticks in cup and the
coins or dice are left standing on table. Sorry so brief, but you
can figger out or ask more later... got to go to job...by by

aH Mike... I guess you could call him a MIME, tho I don't... I have
a problem with his new bit... the HEAD that rises up at the end
of his act.
.
1: It is THE SAME AS RUDY COBY'S ENDING
2: It isn't as good as his SELF HEAD TWISTING

I was looking for him after to discuss, but couldn't find him...

You need someone to help get started. Ask Tabman... he was almost
unable to do it... then I showed him the TOUCH.... the Crandall
book IS THE ONLY ONE THAT REALLY SHOWS YOU THE NEEDED angle to
hold and swing the cup. Crandall used to do it on top of his
briefcase when at the Castle (you can't stack dice on the felt
top tables... just like you can't roller skate in a Buffalo herd).

Re: DMS #2
My guess is that half of the list would have done well, but half
(my opinion) would not... THE AUDIENCE AT THE SEMINAR was not a
normal CLUB audience... but MAGICALUMPEN..... MAGIC IS WHAT THEY
WANT...
.
One thing that most of your list contains are acts WITH ENERGY.
BIG TIME ENERGY IS 90-PERCENT IN COMEDY CLUBS.
.
My guess is that Cervine would be MILDLY OK in a Comedy Club,
based on his pace and energy. Stronger for Magic audience for his
magic content.
