Re: TODD ROBBINS
Why I described the other bent coin routine was to give you the "lunch
money" out so you woulnot again get stuck not having enough souvenirs
for everyone. Main reason I don't do it anymore is bent coins tear
holes in your pockets!
Dinner some time sounds good. How is the taping coming?

Re: DMS - REPORT #2
Your point that "those who know how to use such devices would use them
anyway" is moot. If the rules state that invisible tools are not
allowed, then they're not allowed. And, trust me, it would not be
difficult to ascertain if someone were breaking that rule, assuming you
had an educated panel of observers on hand.
My statement stands. Allowing the use of such devices will lower the
quality of creativity in next year's contest.
As to the input from "respected performers," I know -- I was one of the
ones Joe called, and I stressed very strongly that it was essential to
spell out the ground rules clearly. Speaking of which, the rules are
not at all clear in the pitch that was written up in the brochure given
out at the DMS.

Stan,
We went during the week and saw the palace act also. They were
good. Blackmore and Gold had some great ideas about how some
illusions should be done.
Yes, I'm planning on being there Sunday. I've never been to a
lecture there, so I'll be real interested in seeing how it is all
arranged.
What does Lori do while you attend the lectures?
I'm hoping to make it to the pig wake a week from Friday. Are
you going to be there?
I'll bring some tapes on Sunday.
See you then.

I would consider it a personal favor if you would let me know the
next time you are performing.
It's kinda funny. You prefaced your video with a mention that
you weren't going to show any (much) performing information.
Just the illusions themselves. But I've seen MANY acts with no
more performance in their bag of tricks.

I think Lavand made a bundle. he deserved it. That had to be one
of the highlights of my magical experience. That includes a lot
of years of viewing magic.
.
It's amazing seeing all of the great people, and being able to
say "hello". Why is it that I see some people I flee to the other

Pete - There are a lot of mimes who don't have skill, don't
study, and don't know diddly about persona. They think if you
paint your face white and don't say anything - that's Mime. Yes,
therw are a lot of magicians who don't think about attitude etc.
but don't tar us all with the same brush. It takes a lot more to
become a great performing magician than many other theater arts.
Not only do we have to learn all the arts of the theater arts,

Ken Brooke once countered Ricky Jay's comment about the large load
available in a Paul Fox cup (owing to its shape the load can look
almost bigger than the cup) by taking Ricky and I to a pub and
walking up to a table with 3 couples having a good time. Ken did
the Vernon routine finishing with Lemons that were pretty small,
but MAJOR CHANGE FROM THE KNIT BALLS.... the audience rolled over
with surprise, applause, lafter...etc... Ken just picked up the
stuff and walked out telling Ricky, "See it isn't the size, its
the CHANGE".... WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST ENTERTAINING DISPLAYS OF

Re: SIX HUNDRED?!
That'll teach me, how am I ever going to catch up with nearly six
hundred messages since DMS? Let's see if I can hit the high
points.
As always, it was good to see old friends again, and meet some
new ones. Some of the Magic! names I ran across were:
David, Nathan and Anita, Geno, Jerry, Burt, Pete, Bill and Becki
Wells, Steve Bryant, Stacey, Charlie, Dante Larsen, Max Maven,
Patrice Moore, Bruce Sandercock. There may have been more, but
I'm lucky to remember that many! All the ones I talked to, I had
a great time. All the others that I saw but didn't have the
opportunity to speak to, thanks for allowing me to put faces with
the names.
Special thanks to tabman, your work is wonderful. Sorry you
couldn't make it in person. Your birds are doing well.
Burt, again, GOOD2CU2
Stacey, sorry we missed connections for Pizza, but glad you made
it safely. Yours is the best write up yet on the DMS experience.
I must agree that Cervine connected with the crowd on day one,
but Gazzo seemed to win over day two's crowd a bit easier. Maybe
it was a relief to see SOMEONE performing MAGIC that got Cervine
the votes. Still puzzled as why Gazzo didn't fare better. Even
more puzzled with Vic and Fabrini. Good act, sure, some good
bits, but magic? I wonder.
Burton, thanks for the candle list. I enjoyed our encounter at
DMS. Thanks for the help on making a mere trick something
MEMORABLE! You are truly Bizarre!
Max, I'm still in awe when in the presence of greatness, maybe
one more time and I'll have the nerve to introduce myself.
Sylvester, more likable in person, good close up, just didn't
connect well with the audience. Again, not really magic, just a
lot of stuff (good COMEDY CLUB stuff!) Needs a more likable stage
character.
David, I think you and Burton should put together a guide to
crashing shows. It seems a lot easier than we think. Just act
like you BELONG. For the Record: Jerry DID buy a ticket for
Lance's show, but lost it. Since it was sold out, no replacements
were available. What would YOU have done?
Jerry, do you think maybe there weren't any pad characters on the
line just before the "S" in Sylvester? That might explain the
quit and (S)ave sequence. Just a thought.
RE: DMS 93, Invisible tools? Hey, if they are truly invisible to

Well, lets see . . . You could fund scholarships for needy MAGIC!
members. You could buy Biro a lot of thumb tips and tea kettles. You
could commission a close-up table the size of a pool table from Tabman.
You could take your wife on one of those spiffy cruises Stacey is
selling. You could get a 486-33 with Super-VGA, a gigabyte hard drive,
and a 14,400 bps (57,600 bps throughput) modem and really enjoy MAGIC!

Re: TRILLIN
Jerry...
Am working on a synopsis of the chapter in the new Calvin Trillin book.
It's a rather lengthy piece so it may take me a few days to condense it
down to a good overview. It covers their independent lives before P&T
as well as the formation of the "Asparagus Valley Society" and their
run in both New York and San Francisco before the P&T show was formed.
Penn is from Greenville, New Jersey and Teller is from Philadelphia.
These guys are more normal than they let up to be and have a very deep
respect for magic (surprising?). They just feel, as I do, that magic
needs to "GROW UP!" and quite thinking that it's this mystical crap
that only a few can do.
.
I will give a rather lengthy and detailed synopsis soon, so I will
leave you with the above.

Re: NEWSCAST
I've never assumed that magic was the province of any particular
religion. The suit may be based on some notion that it is an
"anti-religion" and is therefore a religion. Who knows, I'm not the
one who heard it originally.
All told, there are about 21 or so references to magicians and
sorcerers in the King James Version of the Bible. Most of them are
sort of "put downs" - a kind of "could your magicians do this?" A few
are a bit more negative than that. Revelations 21:8 comes down
particularly hard on sorcerers - "But the fearful, and unbelieving, and
the abominable, and murders, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and
idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which
burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death."
Guess you don't want to be buried with any flash paper.

Actually, I said "invisible tools" since I didn't recall that we
spelled out the exact details on this point. I remember the argument
that if the device and the use of the device is not seen, why should
its use not be permitted. I fail to see why that would leave out a
properly used thumb tip. I also recall a discussion regarding the
visibility question and if we should have lay judge(s) to address
this area since magicians might "think" they saw the device when they
in fact didn't or magicians would know where to look to see the
device. Who was going to judge the finalists, the audience or a set
of judges?? I don't remember. I know that the audience was going to
pick the six finalists. I would certainly welcome some discussion
regarding both the use of unseen devices AND the judging of the final
six. Any and all comments are welcome...lets hear from you.

Jerry,
It isn't that we don't know how we would have to count the 1st, 2nd,
and 3rd places, it is the mechanics of going thru some 600 or so
ballots and listing out all the combinations. I guess no ones thinks
it would make a big enough difference in the outcome. Next year we
will have one judging to determine the six finalists and then a
second judging to determine the final order. We will certainly be
discussing all these methods during the upcoming year. I would be

My reasoning is simple: if you allow the use of such devices you
virtually guarantee a less interesting set of results, as the challenge
to devise creative solutions is greatly reduced. As I said to Pete, if
such gaffs are allowed you will be seeing a parade of people throwing
saltshakers into Topits.
Consider just how much more intriguing the contest would be if the goal
was to create some strong magic with no technical preparation
whatsoever. _That_ is the contest I'd like to see.

I have only read the first book of the series (TIP ON A DEAD CRAB).
The character is supposedly based on Mike Skinner, although there is
little connection that I could see. The character rooms with a guy who
hangs out at the track. Shifty feels that the track is the only form
of gambling where an honest edge is possible(?!!!) He even excludes
Blackjack. There is very little talk of magic in the book, and even
though I have a little interest in horse racing, I found the book a
little boring. I guess I should check out a few of the others. Does

Re: DESERT RAMBLINGS
Three part message --
Hard to believe -- my fourth Stevens convention in five
years. Also amazing how Joe always seems to come up
with something unforgettable, true once-in-a-lifetime
opportunities (how many of you missed the chance to see
Marlo?). This year was no exception. Following are a
few of the things that stood out for me. Hope I can
give those who didn't attend a sense of what it was
like.
BEST DUOS -- (1) Rene Lavand and Tina Lenert. The
pairing of Lavand (who hails from a small town in
Argentina) with Tina constituted the absolute highlight
of the convention for me. Lavand spoke only Spanish,
and Tina translated brilliantly. (I asked her later
how she had acquired such skill, and she said she had
spent her first 12 years in Venezuela.) Both were
utterly charming, and Tina's own delight and
astonishment in Lavand's magic complemented his
lectures and performances. Lavand has only one hand,
and with this restriction performed flawless original
miracles with cards and a 3 ball and cup set. Although
he presents his magic seriously (none of the usual bad
magic gags that accompany many closeup performances),
much humor evolves from the sheer impossibility of what
the audience sees. Definitely in the Slydini/Vernon
class. (2) Kevin James and Antonio. As most of you
know, Kevin works with a very small and highly
charismatic person who appears as a Charlie Chaplin
character. At the awards ceremony, Roy (of Siegfried
and ...) made a special point of introducing Antonio,
who used to double for Roy. I'll mention the act later,
but these two are really starting to click as one of
the great acts in magical history. One could imagine
them being discussed in some future edition of LEARNED
PIGS AND FIREPROOF WOMEN. (3) Thomsoni and Company.
While I've seen Johnny Thompson a few times in the past
few years, I haven't seen Pam in a while. She trudged
on stage several times as Johnny emceed one of the
contest events, and she cracked me up each time. All
the guys who tried to win the comedy competition should
envy her talent.
DO YOUR OWN THING -- The Thursday afternoon impromptu
closeup (right!) session offered a preview of some of
the acts that would go on to make this convention
special, including Rene Lavand, Lennart Green, Mike
Close, and Aldo Colombini. Example: Colombini throws
a ball into the audience to obtain a random spectator.
A spectator with the ball comes forward from a
completely different part of the audience. A card is
selected and replaced, and the deck is placed in the
spectator's mouth. Colombini bashes him in the head,
and all the cards fall out but one. A few other
special acts appeared in this session only, including
Mike Galloway with a WIN/LOSE deck on the market, Ramon
Galindo with lovely coin, card, and parakeet
productions, and, once again, Crazy Paul. This year
Paul began by eating a live tiger bug (of which he had
several) and concluded by removing a live mouse from
his mouth. Wish he had been in the contest -- I'd love
to see this guy's entire act. Don't remember what he
did, but also enjoyed the far out character Loch David
Crane who is running for mayor of San Diego. Only in
California!

Re: DESERT RAMBLINGS
Part 2 of 3 --
MELINDA AT THE SANDS -- Melinda opened recently at the
Sands following a very short break from the Sahara, and
she brought all the flash and energy with her that make
her a must see act. New illusions from last year
(including an ambitious one in which a motorscooter is
driven through her) and the addition of Barclay Shaw
with his marionettes have only improved an already
great show, which also continues to feature great
dancers and juggler Anthony Gatto. (I understood from
Barclay later that it was his opening night, Tuesday
the 17th.) One nice bit on the night I attended: One
of the many things that happens during my favorite
opening routine in magic is that Melinda produces a
large male lion. She reached into the cage to scratch
his head, and the lion seemed to love it (who
wouldn't???), his back leg scratching in the air like a
puppy's. I should mention that we had difficult seats,
about as far to the right as one could sit, which
initially made me worry. No problem however: the crew
expertly observed the sight lines, and none of the
various switches that occur during the show were
tipped. I am always curious as to how non-magicians
are attracted to these shows we all see, and so I asked
a nearby couple how they came to be there. They said
that they had heard it was a good show, and that it
didn't cost $70. They weren't disappointed. Melinda
and company were in top form, and I regret that I saw
the show only once this trip. Mmmm. Be still my
beating heart.
MELINDA AT THE TROPICANA -- On the second day of the
DMS contest, the major stars of Las Vegas magic
(Melinda, Lance Burton, Siegfried and Roy) attended the
show (where, incidentally, they saw some terrific
acts). Halfway through the show, Johnny Thompson
announced a ten-minute intermission, and those of us of
a mind and fleet of feet made a beeline to Melinda's
booth, to pay our respects. I arrived a couple of
heartbeats ahead of Max. I thought it ironic that
Lance Burton, arguably the world's greatest magician
and sitting there with his arm around Melinda, achieved
invisibility as everyone queued up to fawn over
Melinda. Ah, skill is one thing, star quality another.
But as to Lance . . .
LANCE BURTON AT THE HACIENDA -- An hour before Lance's
11:00 Saturday show, I asked young Nathan Lichtman how
the show had been. He pronounced it "fine," and indeed
it was. Anticipation built as Lance made a brief
appearance at the between-show party, looking not
unlike Robert Palmer with his backup dancers. Others
told me, prior to the show, that Lance's show was the
second best magic show in town. I disagree. I think
it's the best magic show in town. I'm not a Siegfried
and Roy basher: their extravaganza is possibly the
greatest theatrical experience ever put together. And
I'm a diehard Melinda fan. But when it comes to magic
Lance does it all. Flawless manipulation, impossible
dove productions, great at talking to the audience, and
startling illusions that send you home talking about
them. When people discuss his levitation, they usually
emphasize the erotic nature of it (I'd love to be
Lance's understudy!), and in doing so they fail to
mention what a fooler it also happens to be. A very
brightly lit stage behind him, Lance and his friend
rise slowly to the rafters, and I for one have no idea
how. From the first pre-show Elvis Presley songs to
the final spin of Lance's hat, this is a magic show for
the record books. Lance also features comedic juggler
Michael Goudot (who juggles 3 beanbag chairs) and six
stunning dancers who do the second show topless.
SIEGFRIED AND ROY BACKSTAGE AT THE MIRAGE -- This year
I arrived in Las Vegas early and took my sisters and
mother to see Siegfried and Roy on Monday and Melinda
on Tuesday; they loved both shows. Having just seen
the S and R show for the second time, I was looking
forward to seeing their backstage tour on Saturday.
Great fun. Following a brief movie tour of the
physical plant that backs up the show, S and R brought
out their incredible dragon for part of its show
number, accompanied by several lovely dancers in brief
centurion costumes (at least that comes close). They
froze the dragon and let us on stage to see it up
close. Following this, we were allowed upstairs to S
and R's apartment. Roy's bedroom, which has a
meditation pad rather than a bed, had three glass
enclosures, one containing a vulture, another a mature
white tiger, and the third a gang of baby tigers, one
wrestling wildly with a small blanket. Siegfried's
bedside table supported a nice collection of current
magic books. The bedrooms and living room were
lavishly decorated, and the beautiful centurions stood
guard as 800 or so of us paraded through the place.

Re: DESERT RAMBLINGS
Part 3 of 3 --
THE CONTEST -- My favorite part of any Joe Stevens
convention is the contest. Entries are distilled to
twelve of the best, and the percentage of excellent
acts is therefore extremely high. This year, there was
some complaining that not all of the acts were comedy
acts. Or at least sufficiently comic. Personally, I
didn't mind, because the acts were extraordinarily
creative and accomplished. Some stuff struck me as
quite funny, such as the Magic Plumbers producing a
signed toilet seat in wallet, and Woody Pittman getting
a girl up on stage and telling her this wacky story
about shaving his pets and trying to flush them down
the toilet. I don't remember if he ever did a trick
for her or not. Tony Chapek's mix of live performance
with a character on television was very clever. But my
favorite acts, in no special order, were as follows:
(1) Scott Cervine. Scott made me laugh the loudest,
with his zany dancing and with his impression of his
first magic performance. Really funny when a dancing
cane whirled around him once and then shot across the
stage as the thread apparently broke. Scott came in
second. (2) Gazzo Macee. A street performer who said
this was his first time on stage, Gazzo certainly
seemed at home there and was a master with the
microphone. Very funny at working the audience. Very
British accent, and he looks like a young (but
handsomer) Phil Collins. I was surprised that he
didn't place in the top three. (3) Kevin James.
Previously, I'd seen only part of Kevin's act, and it
was great to see it all. Walks on his hands (?),
produces a living hand from a box, brings a Charlie
Chaplin doll to life, sucks him into a vacuum cleaner,
carries him off by his nose, etc. Weird stuff. (4)
Rudy Coby. Until now all I had ever seen Rudy do was
his four-legged man. Lots of body magic this time.
Highlight was a robot pushing a table across the stage.
At least the top half is a female robot. The bottom
half is a very real and live bottom half of a human
female, scantily clad. I want one of these
robot/tables. A personal note. Last year I complained
because the contest emcees for one of the shows were
political types, not pro entertainers. This year's
emcees were Aldo Colombini and Johnny Thompson, and
both were strong.
CARD MAGIC -- I love card magic and saw some truly
wonderful things this time. Lennart Green of Sweden
and Rene Lavand fooled everyone. Green's material is
built around separating reds and blacks from a shuffled
deck (then clubs and spades, etc.). He takes his
glasses off and blinds himself with a laser beam, then
proceeds as a blind man to shuffle the deck by mushing
it around on the table, then produces the cards in
order by suit. Got to see him do this later for Paul
Harris, who arrived late. Fun to watch Paul's eyes
widen. Lavand had a stunning one-hand oil and water,
done very slowly. Should also mention that Geno Munari
really caught me by letting me push four aces all the
way into the deck, and then he dealt them into a
designated poker hand.
CUTEST FEMALE COMPANION -- Lots of talk this year about
Joe's wording re female companions. Because being a
magician is often considered a sort of nerdy thing to
be in high school, I am impressed when one of the
brethren latches onto a real beauty. This year the
drop dead winner as most gorgeous female companion was
the 22-year-old friend of Gazzo Magee, who is also a
model. The story, and I am happy to believe it, is
that she saw him doing street magic somewhere and said
that this was the man for her. Romance lives. Makes
one want to take up street magic.
HOTTEST DEALER ITEM -- Mike Close's pothole trick from
WORKERS I. Mike did his best Al Cohen nonstop dealer
demonstration and gathered a crowd every time he
demonstrated, which was almost constantly.
SECOND HOTTEST DEALER ITEM -- Mike Close's toothpick
through bill from WORKERS II (also available separately
complete with gaff).
FUNNIEST LINE OF THE CONVENTION -- Mike Close's line
about ...
Sorry, can't print it. MAGIC! doesn't condone slander,
even for a laugh.
KITTY LITTER -- I think Max Maven tapped into a trend
when he came up with his Meow Mix feature in M A G I C.
It was amazing how many catty things I heard this trip,
from all sorts of people about all sorts of people.
Lots of jealousy and sour grapes out there in
magicland. Too bad. If you watch talent such as was
present in the contest, or if you go to see, say,
Melinda or Lance or Siegfried and Roy, and you don't
have a really good time, then I suggest it isn't the
fault of the performers.
FINAL THRILLS -- In addition to the continuing
pleasure of meeting and spending time with MAGIC!
members (exciting to watch one of us crash a major show
after losing his ticket!), people are what always make
a convention fun. Thanks, Geno, for letting me see
your new showroom at the San Remo. Fun to meet the
Roger Burgets. To see the Dick Dales again, and Chuck
Rubey. And Ted Jordan. To meet Loch David Crane. And
Dante Larsen. And the Bill Wells. A SPECIAL thrill to
meet Gloria Marcom, aka Vampira. Ditto Amy Stevens.
Only regret is that my old friend from past
conventions, Charles Penton, is no longer with us. He
would have liked this one.

Re: TODD ROBBINS
David, you asked "Why should I be judged by my job title?" At first it
might seem that the proper answer should be that job title is
irrelevant. This to me has been a very important part of my life and
should be closely considered by all magicians and mentalists. For the
most part of my adult life I have worked in sales and marketing. For
several years this was eyeball to eyeball with a homeowner selling some
room addition or other home improvement construction.
I have learned a great deal about designing your show for your
audience from this experience. I have learned that by knowing someones
occupation I can tell a great deal about them. In spite of the fact
that many people are not happy with their jobs, people seem to
gravitate towards things that they are interested in. Space here does
not permit me to go into the behavioral science studies that are the
foundation of the philosophies propounded in the sales books, but
suffice that I can do a cold reading by knowing someones occupation. In
some cases there are striking correlations between occupation and
favorite colors, foods, and recreational activities. Etiquette,
vocabulary skills, and energy level also vary by occupation.
How does this all relate to magic? If you are performing for any
group you should tailor your story line to your audience. Auto
mechanics will not be enchanted by a discourse in metaphysics, but a
group of doctors might be. The blue collar workers are usually more
appreciative of visual, energetic magic. An engineer will view each
effect as a puzzle to be solved. Knowing that an accountants favorite
colors are most likely green (65%) or brown (25%) or that an executives
favorite color is most likely dark blue (80%) might be all it takes to
be a miracle worker.
Why do new aquaintances ask the occupation question? Because we are
all looking for common ground to start a conversation. I also believe
that subliminally we know many of the above types of things about
people by knowing their occupation. Yes it is stereotyping and is not
100% accurate, but I know lots of salesmen who make very good livings
by knowing how to play to their audience just by knowing about someones
occupation.

I am also one who makes the "druggie" correlation with Sylvester. While
I may have short hair I am in the same generation with the Jester. I
like many of the things he does in the act but my druggie comment comes
from going to a high school where the drug culture was very popular.
There are several direct references to being on drugs. Such as "I'm
starting to get a buzz" After hitting himself 3 times with a frying pan
after doing the parody of the public service commercial "This is my
brain...This is drugs......This is my brain on drugs" There were
several other places in the act where the tone of voice used and
attitude were of one who was loaded. In a way it sort of reminded me of
the actions of the burned out kid in the movie "Fast Times at Ridgmont
High". I also agree that the persona displayed was not likable. If that
persona were changed somewhat and the gross sight gags removed it could
be a very good act.
I have seen Sylvester several times now and there are many parts of the
act that I do like. In a smaller setting like the Castle's main stage
some of the effects like the anvil production are absolutely killer.
Overall I think Sylvester is good technically at what he does, but he
desperately needs another writer.
P.S. sorry about all the " " ,Evan.

It would seem to me the easiest way for people to vote for all three

would be equal to three points, second place two points, and third
place one point. The points are then totalled for each contestant.
Whoever has the most points wins first place, second most points wins
second place, etc. This would not really require any more work to
tabulate than the current method and would serve to even out the scores
and have all of the other benifits we discussed last year.

The ones I love are when I find nobody home and a neighbor says 'They

I -- uh -- I think I lost your number' ... I have no solution to

people who are likely to pull that sort of stunt.

Thank you for a well-reasoned response to my gripe about being judged
by job title. I guess that in my case my gripe is motivated by the
fact that I am what Dianne Brill describes as a "slash person," one who
has multiple titles. In my series of careers I've been everything from
a busboy to a truckdriver to a university professor to a training
developer, with stops in between to be a DJ and newscaster, mage,
MAGIC! sysop, and a few other things. What bothers me is that the
roles like being a professor got more respect than being a truckdriver,
even though I was the same person.
Lately, I tend to tell people I'm a househusband and just let it go at
that.

TO - Tommy Wonder
I just found my copy of Nelms. A quick run-through. He does at
first glance seem to stress performing as a real magician would.
He stresses mystery as adding meaning to a performance.
.
In one place he mentions that a person with magical powers would
not do a four ace trick. I wonder where he would put Bob Sheets,
Doc Eason, Don Allan, Del Ray, Albert Goshman and an entire group
who make to pretense of mystical skills - just pure
entertainment. I've read your book on the Cups and Balls etc. and
do not see any of Nelms' ideas in it.
.
Watching Lavand the other night was a case in point. He does very
poetical presentations, but he chose to start with shuffling a
deck, leaving it in new deck order. Then a sequence of Oil and
Water. The motif was to show his skill. The three balls in the
cup routine is done with humor and a bit of puzzlement as to how
it works. He seems as puzzled as the audience.
.
More later.

OK - Magic Lore. Nelms says "The conjuror who ignores 'real'

I think you are reading the "The conjuror who ignores 'real' magic"
line with a heavy hand, Cy. He didn't say "you have to do it my way,"
he said "a source of clues to credulity." The point he is trying to
make, I think, is that people DO want to believe in magic. And he
cites the evidence that bestselling books frequently use themes of real
magic (as do top box office movies) and that authors understand the
public in this regard.
I think he is saying that despite our cynical culture, there are very
sound psychological reasons that people want to believe in magic, and
that it is us, not the audience, that turns a routine into puzzles or
juggling.

Re: BRAIN & MIND SYMPOSIUM
Ee;38106
There is a 'Brain & Mind Symposium' AKA Tools for the Mind, to
be held April 11 & 12 at the LAX Hilton Convention Center, 5711
W. Century Blvd. from 10 am - 8 pm.
.
The brochure states the following as the purpose of the symposium,
"The Magic of the New Age is the ability to access expanded and alter
ed states of consciousness. There is a relationship between these
states and personal power, personal growth, and healing. These are
the _Tools_for_the_Mind_. Tools which can open doors in a fast, safe
and effective way. The purpose of The Brain and Mind Symposium is to
offer these tools in the following fields:
. Hypnotherapy Past Life Regression Psychotronics
.
Highlights include a lecture and workshop by Timothy Leary on Virtual
Reality and a PK party (spoon bending) by Jack Houck.
.
Two day admission to the lectures and exhibits are $ 19 ($ 26 at the
door). Workshops are $ 20 each ($25 at the door). For further info
call 310-399-2992.
.
Admission covers access to all the lectures and exhibits, whereas
you have to pay extra for the workshops. I did the PK party workshop
at the Whole Life Expo, its fun to be in a room with 30-40 people
hollering at silverware.

Re: THE PIG IS DEAD
Wrapping the torn card in 'normal' paper was my first thought, howeve
r I don't like it for 2 reasons. 1) you have to ditch the torn card p
ieces which leaves you open to detection by the astute observer, 2)
why wrap the cards in paper ? it doesn't make sense.
.
I want to be able to bring the card form behind my back, card face do
wn. I tell the person the name of their card - they aren't impressed,
so I tear it in pieces, hand them one corner and drop the pieces into
my 'witchy' looking tray, which is placed on top of the deck.
.
I merely light the pieces (which I want to burn reasonably fast -
instantly would be good, but not mandatory), I spread the deck and
the card is face up restored with the matching corner in the
spectator's hand. That is the effect I'm shooting for.
.
Anyone that has any ideas on how to get a card to burn faster, please
jump in.

Hey I'm on your side I think compulsories would give a performer a
chance to show their originality in presentation, while making the
judging easier as far as technique is concerned. Could give technical
points and artistic pints just like in skating.
.
The improv becomes much more difficult to deal with. If a toppit is
considered an aid and is not allowed how about using a side pocket
as a servante ? Is that legal ?

Magi that DO NOT attempt to tap into the genetic consciousness that
'real' magic exists, are mere 'tricksters' or jugglers in my
estimation.
.
I agree people DO want to believe in magic, its in their genes, they
want to see a demonstration and are disappointed when the 'magician'
merely does 'tricks' with his magic boxes, dove pans, and square
circles. Real magic comes when you are not sure whether the performer
is tapping into supernatural forces or not.

The magic of Vic & Fabrizzi was not strong enough to win. Their
comedy was not strong enough to win. I believe they won mainly on
Fabrizzi very strong acrobatic mime moves. My only problem with
them winning was that it was supposed to be a comedy magic competitio
n. If it was a magic variety act competition, then I can see them
winning.
.
I agree that bringing together a number of art froms enhances the
entertainment value of an act. I happen to like mime and dance as
part of a magic performance, e.g. Les Bubb, Jeff McBride, etc. it
was just that the particuliar venue was supposed to be comedy magic.

There is an Annemann effect in the Jinx called (I believe) A CARD IN
HIGH in which a card wrapped in a piece of newspaper vanishes. The
rather brilliant idea here is that you only pretend to deal the card
onto the paper -- which is actually a photo-offset (now a photocopy
would do) of a newspaper sheet WITH A CARD LYING ON IT. Annemann
suggests you draw in shadow lines before printing -- but that is all I
remember off the top of my head. Check the reference.

Re: CASTLE REPORT
Yawn, groan . . . It is after 2 a.m. and I just got back from the
Castle.
A few interesting things tonite:
HOMER HUDSON celebrated his 86th Birthday in the presence of JOYCE
BASCH. Homer created a series of novelty side tables with silk screens
of rabbits, cobras, dragons and Hindus on them. He talked a bit about
Floyd Thayer and how he had given his Thayer stuff to Doc Albo.
ALDO COLOMBINI was very good in the Close-Up Gallery. He was both
funny and magical and did a number of nice bits. It was good to get a
final look at him for this tour, as I won't be able to attend the
lecture on Sunday.
TOM OGDEN was conducting his usual madness in the Late Parlour.
JADE, LARRY CLARK, and BRIAN GILLIS were in the Palace. Brian opened,
and I don't know what happened, but he terminated his routine early,
dumped his props into a box and made an exit. Seemed to me he'd been
doing pretty good up 'till then. Still it is hard to fill the Palace
with card tricks.
JADE was SUPERB tonite! She did a beautiful, beautiful job and captured
the hearts of the house.
LARRY CLARK was very funny! But NOTHING to do with magic! Oh, yeah,
he ATTEMPTED to do a couple of paper balls over a guys head - but he
did it BADLY and the guy watched the balls go by. Funny, entertaining,
BUT WHAT IS THIS ACT DOING AT THE _MAGIC_ CASTLE??? Doesn't anyone
remember how to spell M-A-G-I-C ??? It is in the name of the place!
Lots of folks wandering around tonite - Larry Jennings, Johnny
Thompson, John Carney, and GAZZO MACEE! He and I talked and speculated
on the DMS vote. He had a good attitude about it, I'm just sorry he
didn't place in the money.
What was it Samuel Pepys used to say? "And so to bed."

I feel Nelms book is great because he discusses many subjects
which are food for thought, it can clarify one's own thinking. It
is not per se necessary to adopt his style, many, well most of
his thoughts I feel are valid for any style, and so worthy of
serious study.

Re: THE PIG IS DEAD
Pete,
When you soak a card (or anything) in kerosene or gas, the
flammable liquid is what burns, and not the card. In fact, to a
certain degree, the evaporation keeps the soaked item cooler than
if you just set a match to it. Eventually, the flame attacks the
soaked item, but not until much later. This is the basis of one
of my new things, in which I tell the observers that I'm tired of
watching jugglers juggle torches. Where's the danger in that?
Then I proceed to juggle spheres that have been dipped in lighter
fluid and set aflame. (Okay, I soak my hands in sodium silicate,
but you get the idea.)

The answer to your question is provided in the following joke of rather
hoary vintage:
A stage magician receives a visitation from an angel, who says, "We've
been observing your activities, and are quite impressed with the amount
of time you've devoted to charitable causes and kind efforts.
Therefore, we would like to do something to reward your virtue. What
would you like?"
The magician replies, "All my life I have endeavored to use my skills
to bring the illusion of magic to my audiences. My wish is to have
_real_ magical powers."
"Done!" says the angel. "From now on, you can accomplish any feat you
can imagine."
The magician is, of course, overjoyed. At his next show he greets the
audience, and proceeds to _really_ cause a cut rope to restore; to
_really_ make a metal ball float beneath a cloth; to _really_ link a
set of rings; to...

the contents which counts, not wether you find the way the
information is packaged sleep inducing or not.
.
I hope for you that you did not judge the book on the way the
information is packaged(i.e. sleep inducing), because that would
be exactly like someone judging a person on skin cloucolor. In
both cases one should judge the contents, not the packaging.
.
If you have not fully studied the information Nelms gives, then I
feel you have no right at all to give any judgment whatsoever.
And you should refrain from doing so.

If however you did study the information, then I would love to
hear what subjects or reasoning in the book you do not agree

Jerry,
Ofcourse, I was not there, and so I'm not able to judge this act
in respect to the others. Perhaps the danger lies in the fact
that this was called a 'comedy magic' competition. Such a name
gets many spectators leaning back in their chairs and think
'well, make me laugh' when the curtains splits at the beginning
of an act. I have often thought that announcing an act as a
'comedy act' may bias some spectators the wrong way round.
People that may have enjoyed the act otherwise, are now busy
(un)consciously judging all events in the act in the light of
comedy and are not in the state of enjoying the act. In such a
case it may be possible for ANY act that make these people
forget this procces (not neccesarily an act that IS funny) to
win.
About Les Bubb, I only saw him do mime (I liked his appearance
in the Paul Daniels Magic Show) does he mix this with magic as
well?

Re: SLEEP
To Tommy rijsttafel(?) Wow I thought it was spelled Ristaffel?
.
What do I know. I know the old days in show business, when my dad
was in Vaudeville, the acts would sit around all day and play cards
and people thought they were no good lazy bums. But a few of them
(even tho they were in a different city EVERY WEEK) did a lot of
study and ran some kinds of businesses. But it was difficult, as
in those days there were no telephones, no modems... they used
to send messages -- very short ones -- by the Western Union
Telegraph company. Travel was by train and his props had to be
taken by horse and buggy to the rail station and put on the baggage
car. He travelled with his own scenery "NO ONE WOULD THINK OF
WORKING IN FRONT OF THE 'HOUSE BLACK BACKDROP' and a special
table that was four feet tall, and eight feet by eight feet.
They (he had a single partner) roller skated up on top of the
table. Even as big as 8 x 8, buy skating standards it was like
doing the act on a postage stamp. They were TOP opening act in
the business in thier day. Act lasted 5 minutes.
.
Nelm. Yes, I am checking out chapters one at a time. I am not
influenced by his personality, his life style... just want to see
what he has to say. Much does not mean much to me... but I have
always listened to a different drummer (as they say) and always
like the unusual and believe that an Artist is because it is in
them... as I mentioned before. Some people study and work all the
time but they have no Charisma... no sense of style... which cannot
be (in my opinion) "learned" it is there or it is not.
.
So... pretend to work during the day... Hahahahah... best! pb

To T. Wonder.
Aha... your next message is interesting too... Yes... actually I
have a theory. That to make it to the TOP... you need many things,
and right now there is only ONE PERSON at the Top... altho there
are a couple of others very close.
COPPERFIELD
BURTON
.
I leave Siegfried and Roy out because they are a "show" and it is
a full package... not the same genre as above 2.
.
Now, what does Biro say is needed. (It is the same in music etc)
To be at the top one must have: DRIVE, GOOD HEALTH (you can't catch
colds all the time), ENERGY, PURPOSE, INCREDIBLE ABILITY TO NOT
ONLY CHOOSE THE RIGHT MATERIAL but the right people working for you.
Including best Publicist, Agent, Business Manager... Good looks,
Good wardrobe. Good everything.... to be on top takes so much it
is no wonder there are so few.
.
It is not necessary TO BE ON TOP... but you must always be aiming
up, up, up. That is why I got upset with a lad at a Magic Convention
Panel Discussion when a guy asked me a question about what he
should do next? I said, "What do you want to do more than anything
else?" and he said "Be an Audio Visual Technician" ... I said,
"Well then quit fooling with magic... next question!" He got all
upset... so I said, "If you told me you wanted to be the best
magician there ever was, that you were envious of David Copperfield
and you wanted to know what to do to become a better performer,
then we would sit down and talk for hours... but you don't seem
to be interested in magic enough... go talk to audio engineers!"
.
I had to be honest. We were told later by some friends that the
magic audience was talking about how BRUTAL we were. (Others on
panel were Max Maven, Mike Close, Jim Sisti, Ray Mertz and Timothy
Wenk). Maven and Close were as hard hitting as I was.
.
I am sure that the top directors of plays are BRUTAL to their
actors when they need to be to help them to GIVE MORE THAN THEY
HAVE EVER DONE SO BEFORE.

Les Bubb does not mix in magic. He is an acrobatic mime of the
highest order.
Vic and Fabrini WERE funny. Not the joke-a-minute laff laff laff
kind of funny. Just like Chrarlie Chaplin was funny.
What was interesting was how badly the comedy club type comedy
acts fared with a magician audience. Comedy can be very subtle
and can be very broad.
.
A pie in the face is one form of comedy. A fly flying near you
and the look on your face can also be funny, but very subtle.
.
A good example to me was the selection at the last FISM. The act
that won the comedy award to me was not funny. The props were
the act, the magician didn't evoke any funny. The little guy that
had trouble tossing his gloves on the table and then had the
dancing cane start hitting him and chasing him about the stage was,
TO ME... THE FUNNIEST "PERFORMER" THERE... and I gave him my
highest score.
.
There is always going to be differences of opinion... but the one
thing about Vic and Fabrini... THEY RECEIVED A HUGE AMOUNT OF
VOTES FROM THE AUDIENCE. (Each person in the audience picked their
favorite act -- there were no rules, no judges... no time limit,
etc. It was very open and very fair.)

"It" is very important! BUT I have always felt that "It" is still only
a tool - it is like a dull knife. To make "It" work, you still have to
focus, concentrate, and think. Too many people have abused and wasted
their ability because they rely on it too much. No matter how talented
you are, no matter how charismatic you are, no matter how much skill
you have, if you aren't working with it instead of against it, it will
fail. The knife has to be kept sharp - otherwise, the talented person
is nothing but the most talented third-string performer in the pack.

grapes. Will have to re-think my definitions.

Re: DMS - REPORT #2
This is my disagrement. People DO NOT want to believe in magic -
or at least - don't want performers to seem to takek it for
granted that they do.
.
Something is running beneath all of this discussion. He seems to
be taking a point which is applicable to stage magic and applying
it to close-up or platform. People watching trick boxes etc. will
usually think, quite peoperly so, that they could buy these
things and do them. Watching a skilled performer of sleight of
hand is a different matter. I think the appeal to wonder in an
audience is available without all of the appeals to "real" magic.

Reading is of course important. The argument is if Nelms is the
proper thing to read. I don't think he knows a lot about about
the theory of magic. He does say some worth while things, but I
think this theory of desire to believe is wrong-headed.
.
I am a great lover of the movies and theater and yet I don't
recognize myself in his description of a viewer as droping my
dis-belief.

Jade is a good example of a magical entertainer. Suberb
showmanship, but I don't get the feeling that she is trying to
convince me that she is some kind of witch.

He describes just tricks as being used by a salesman etc. but
seem to feel this is a lesser form of the art. I disagree.
.
The points on attention control seem to be OK and some things are
food for thought, but I would stop short of saying he was
"great".

I think Nelms TRIED to write a very serious dense book on a
subject that was beyond him. The writing is very tight but in
trying to unravel the ideas I get bogged down. This is Bill's
problem.
.
I'm still trying to find exactly what he means by "meaning".

Now you're talking. I think Fitzkee is very good and if you
really want to find out about magic, Maskelyne is the book.
Almost all he says is to the point and quite easy to read. Also I
think that most of the tricks Nelms uses as examples are not too
great.
.
You don't have to point out chapters in Maskelyne - read it all!!
.
I started to list for our sysop, those books which deal with
theory. Maskeylne would lead the list. Check certain chapters in
Sachs, Hugard and Tarbell.

Pete - I don't envy Copperfield or want to have all of those
people working for me. I can't picture myself being the top with
a TV show or a big Las Vegas production.
.
I do envy Johnny Thompson, Bob Sheets, Mike Ammar, Doc Eason etc.
I would like to be the best close-up and platform performer in
the world. Not necessarily the most famous. Should I give it all
up? I happen to think my desires are in the direction of the real
art of magic. At my age being Dai Vernon would not be too bad as
a mentor.

"How does this relate to what I do" I find that Nelms has very
little to say that "relates" to what I, or the people I admire
and try to emulate, do. I read things over several times and find
little that helps.

Sleights and props are tools. "IT" is skill in presentation. The
block of marble is made to look like David through the artist's
skill - not through tools. Modern tools are better than the ones
Michaelangelo used - They produce Mount Rushmore - not David.

Am sure the Sheetman reads magic, but not theory, showmanship...
etc... let's ask the dude?
