The Pyro Shot is a spring powered incendiary ball dispenser. It is hand held and the butt is placed against the hip. A rearward stroke of the slide cocks the spring and feeds one ball into the barrel. On the forward (return) stroke, a needle pierces the ball and a pump injects .5 cc of glycol, charging the ball.
The spring is released automatically at the end of the forward stroke and the charged ball is launched to the desired location. No operator action is required other than to pull the slide back and move it forward to dispense charged balls. A delay of 20 to 60 seconds, depending on ambient temperature, occurs before ignition....click for more information..

Rusty Boys, the PyroShot inventor, and I, his erstwhile cousin, photographer, writer turned PyroShot pitchman (and you might say a true believer), traveled to Merritt Island NWR on Florida's Atlantic coast to both participate in and observe a prescribed burn. We'd been waiting for weeks for conditions to work out right so we jumped at the chance to make a days drive and spend two days stomping around in a scrubby palmetto and cabbage palm forest just a few miles north of Cape Canaveral to film not only the PyroShot Hand Launcher in action but also the Red Dragon Aerial Ignition in action.

Both the PyroShot Hand Launcher and the Red Dragon Aerial Ignition operate on the SEI Industries Dragon Eggs polystyrene spheres with 3 grams of potassium permanganate crystals that when injected with a half cc of glycol burst into flame after a delay of twenty to thirty seconds insuring ignition of the prescribed burn area.
The trip to Florida and a chance to work with both Federal and State foresters and wild life management officials was an opportunity too good to pass up. We got some great film and video shots of the equipment in action and the resultant footage tells the story of the PyroShot and the Red Dragon in action. Just click on the video link labeled PyroShot below and the video should open up in Windows Media Player.
To see Red Dragon in action, you'll like the video labeled Red Dragon. Both the Aerial machine and the ground launcher use the same Dragon Egg spheres.
